CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte 49ers softball team wrapped up its 2009 fall exhibition season by splitting a doubleheader on Sunday with UNC Greensboro and Elon. The Niners opened the day by falling to UNCG before defeating Elon in a come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix in the seventh inning.

In the opening game, Charlotte lost 3-1 to the Spartans of UNC Greensboro with junior pitcher Katy Hackett taking the loss despite striking out seven batters and only allowing four hits.

Tenaya Tucker and Whitney Williams led the 49ers as the duo combined for four hits including two doubles. Tucker drove in Williams for Charlotte’s only run of the game. Williams also had a stolen base in the game, while Tucker added two more hits in the game.

Charlotte finished the fall slate of games on the winning note as they defeated Elon 5-4 in the Sunday finale. Emily Jeffery picked up her third win of the fall as she came into the game as a relief pitcher.

Trailing late in the game, Charlotte started a two-out rally in the sixth inning that saw the 49ers load the bases off a Ginny Price hit as well as Kendra McCall notching a single. After Chelsea Stamey drew a walk, Williams stepped to the plate and drove in two runs with a single to tie the game at three apiece.

After allowing one run in the top of the seventh, the 49ers once again made a comeback as Briana Gwaltney led off the inning with a single and was followed by a Tucker base hit, which set up a game-winning single by Lorena Vela, who went 3-for-4 in the game.

Charlotte was led by performances by Vela, Williams (3-for-3) and Gwaltney (2-for-3, 2-Run HR).

The Niners end the fall season with a 4-4 record with a 4-2 record in home exhibition games.
