Williams and Malene Earn All-Conference Nods

Malene Named to All-A-10 Squad Three Consecutive Years

May 6, 2008

Charlotte, N.C. - Behind a team-leading .343 average in regular season action and .446 mark in conference play, freshman outfielder Whitney Williams was named the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team and All-Rookie team, league officials announced Tuesday. Junior second baseman Sarah Malene received first team honors, marking her fourth all-conference award to date, and was also named to the Academic All-Conference team.

Williams, a two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, most recently brought in the game-winning run in the 49ers' season finale against Saint Joseph's. She has collected 17 RBI on the season in 140 at-bats, accumulating 48 hits, including five doubles, and a .393 slugging percentage. She ranks second on the team in on-base percentage at .403 in her 44 starts. The week of April 21st, the freshman hit eight straight at-bats, going three-for-three in game two of a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro and four-for-four in game two of the La Salle twin bill.

Malene, who has been an all-conference selection every year in which she has worn the 49er uniform, now ranks first in the 49er single-season record books with 43 runs scored, shattering her 2006 record of 42 and moving her career total to 110, good for second place on the career all-time list. She leads Charlotte in on-base percentage at .419 and also boasts an impressive 28 stolen bases on the season, placing her third in the single-season record books. In her 191 at-bats, she boasts a .309 average, good for third on the team, on 59 hits and 19 RBI.

Malene, a Business major, was named to first-team all-conference and to the all-rookie team her freshman year before earning a place on the second team last season.

Williams and Malene join the rest of the 49ers tomorrow for a 4 p.m. contest against Saint Joseph's in the first round of the 2008 A-10 Tournament at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
