Charlotte, N.C. - After starting at second base and serving as the lead-off batter in all 66 contests this season, junior Sarah Malene was named the 2008 Most Valuable Player, head coach Aimee DeVos announced Wednesday. With her 46 runs on the season, the All A-10 first team and All A-10 Academic team selection shattered her 2006 record of 42 runs in the single season record books, pushing her career total to 113, good for second place all-time.
Malene led the team and ranked second in the conference with 29 stolen bases, the second-most in 49er season history, and also anchored the team in on-base percentage (.416), triples (four) and walks (33). She ranked second on the team with a .388 slugging percentage, 81 total bases and 66 hits, moving her to third in the single-season record books and allowing her to crack the top-10 career all-time list with 158. Malene collected 20 RBI on the year, including three multiple RBI games.
She was also named to the All A-10 Tournament team after putting together a .389 average in the 49ers' five games, turning in three runs, seven hits and one RBI.
The 49ers finished with a 35-31 mark overall this season, going 12-8 in conference action and making a run to the championship game of the A-10 Tournament where they fell to No. 20 Massachusetts.
