Auburn, AL - Charlotte 49ers softball's senior second baseman Sarah Malene. a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, helped the Virginia Legends win their third straight 23-and-under ASA National Tournament in Auburn, Alabama last week, July 17-20. The Virginia Legends went 7-2 in the Tournament and after coming from the Loser's Bracket they defeated the Georgia Fire twice (Game 1 - 6-1, Game 2 - 9-1) in the Championship game.
"It was a great experience playing with and against a bunch of great college players," Malene said. "Playing in this tournament and winning the National Title is something that I will remember for the rest of my life."
Malene was joined on the Virginia Legends team by collegiate players from University of Florida, LSU, University of Tennessee, University of South Carolina, University of Missouri and USC Upstate.
"Sarah did a great job for us," Legends coach Bobby Willis said. "She played very solid defense for us as well as helping us out offensively. She was a great addition to our team."
Malene started all nine games of the Tournament for the Legends. She played eight of those games at second base, which is the position that she has excelled at for the 49ers 2008 A-10 Tournament Championship finalist team the past three seasons. She also played one game in the Tournament at designated player.
For the tournament, Malene tallied four hits, two doubles, three RBI and scored four runs while fielding 17 defensive chances.
This past spring, she was named the 49ers 2008 Most Valuable Player, after scoring a school-record 46 runs last season. Malene led the team and ranked second in the conference with 29 stolen bases, the second-most in school history. She also led the team in on-base percentage (.416), triples (four) and walks (33). She ranked second on the team with a .388 slugging percentage, 81 total bases and 66 hits.
