CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The 2009 Charlotte Softball slate was announced today as the 49ers will play eight exhibition games in the autumn months to tune up for the 2010 season. The Niners have six home games this season and play only two exhibitions away from D.L. Phillips Complex.
Leading off the fall schedule is a trip to nearby Greensboro, N.C. on Sept. 20 for a pair of games against UNC Greensboro at 11 a.m. followed by a matchup with the Pirates of East Carolina. Last year, the Niners took three of four games from the Spartans by a scoring difference of 21-10.
Charlotte finishes the fall season with six straight home games that start on Sept. 26 with two games against St. Andrews Presbyterian and Queens University (N.C.) starting at 5:30 p.m.
Charlotte begins the month of October with a rematch with UNC Greensboro at D.L. Phillips immediately followed by a game with Wingate University. The duo of games is set to start at 2 p.m.
The fall schedule ends the following day, Oct. 4, with a third exhibition with UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m. followed by another SoCon opponent, Elon University, which caps off the season.
The Niners return first-team All-Atlantic 10 members Serena Smith and pitcher Emily Jeffrey to the 2010 squad from last year's squad that finished with a 33-16 mark, which was the seventh highest total wins in program history and the sixth most victories in the fast-pitch era. The team's .673 winning percentage is the fourth-highest total during the fast-pitch era.
Head Coach Aimee DeVos also added to the roster seven incoming freshman, who will need to fill the voids left by five seniors from the 2009 squad.
