Greenville, S.C. - The Charlotte 49ers dropped their second match of the spring at Furman in as many days, falling 7-0 to Alabama Saturday afternoon. The Niners drop to 0-2 overall, while the Crimson Tide improves to 2-0.
Alabama came out strong against the 49ers in doubles to earn the point. The No. 1 tandem of Andrea Brenes and Paulina Bigos defeated Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming, 8-3, while Tiffany Welcher and Alice Tunaru beat Yudeshnee Pillay and Candace Cunningham, 8-3. At the No. 3 slot, Meritt Emery and Bianca Svensson defeated Kimber Redfern and Yana Stoeva, 8-5.
In singles, the Tide took all six matches and Allison Nolen won 8-2 in an exhibition match. At No. 1 singles, Welcher defeated Spivakovsky, 6-2, 7-6(4). With the win, Welcher improved to 9-5 overall. Tunaru defeated Pillay at the No. 3 slot, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to improve to 8-8 on the season. Rounding out the top half of the singles lineup, Bigos defeated Fleming, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 3 slot. With the win, Bigos improved to 11-5 on the season.
At the No. 4 slot, Emery picked up her 10th win of the season over Redfern, 6-4, 6-1, while Brenes defeated Stoeva, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5 slot. Brenes is now 10-5 overall on the season. At the No. 6 singles slot, Svensson defeated Cunningham, 6-3, 6-4, to improve to 11-6 on the season.
Charlotte will host a pair of home matches next on the schedule, beginning with a Thursday afternoon match versus Winston-Salem State, beginning at 2:30.
