Elon, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team captured the doubles point, but could not win enough singles matches to win the match in a 5-2 losing decision at Elon Thursday in non-conference action. The loss drops Charlotte to 3-5, while the Phoenix improve to 6-4.
Ana Spivakovsky and Koren Fleming outlasted the number-one pair of Deanna Bailey and Anna Milian 8-6, while at number-three, Kimber Redfern and Gabi Vergara blasted Jenn Tucci and Hayley Wahl 8-2 to capture the double point.
In singles play, only Spivakovsky could capture a point with a win at number-one, taking out Bailey 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Candace Cunningham was defeated in a pair of tiebreaking points, 3-6, 7-6 (4) and 10-8 in a tiebreaking superset.
The Niners will travel to the Palmetto state Sunday to take on College of Charleston at 10 a.m.
