Niners Women's Tennis Advances in Opening Match of Atlantic 10 Championships

Yudeshnee Pillay Improves to 16-11 in Singles and 12-2 in Doubles Play in Team Victory

April 18, 2008

Monroeville, Pa. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team advanced past George Washington in the morning round of the Atlantic 10 Championships. Charlotte, the seven seed, will take on second-seeded Temple Friday afternoon. All tournament matches are taking place at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.

"Our girls played hard today," said Niners head coach Michaela Quinn. "I am very proud of our team's effort."

The tenth-seeded Colonials got one point at number-one singles when Charlotte's Ana Spivakovsky, with a lingering injury, had to retire up a set in the second.

The Niners started with a point in the doubles play. Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay won at the top doubles spot, 8-3. The number-two doubles pair of Candace Cunningham and Koren Fleming secured the doubles point with their own 8-3 decision.

Pillay has a team-best 16 singles victories, while she and Spivakovsky are 12-2 in doubles play this season.

In singles play, Pillay, Fleming and Kimber Redfern all got wins in straight sets to secure the team victory.
