Monroeville, Pa. - The Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team, seeded fifth, won the third-place match over third-seeded Xavier at the 26th Annual Atlantic 10 Championships Sunday morning, 4-3 at the Club 4 Life.

Charlotte's top pair of Ana Spivakovsky and Yudeshnee Pillay won their doubles match, but the Niners fell at two and three to give Xavier a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

The Niners were able to capture four of the six singles matches for the victory, capped off by Pillay winning her number-two match 6-4, 7-5 for the team win.

Charlotte also won at number one (Spivakovsky, 6-2, 6-3), three (Koren Fleming, 6-1, 6-2) and at six in a third-set tiebreaker by Kimber Redfern, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8).

Pillay finishes the season with 25 singles wins (25-4) and will be one behind the school record of 26, set by Spivakovsky in 2007. She was 19-1 in the spring dual match season, losing only her match on Saturday in the semifinals. Redfern's victory was her career-best 24th win (24-3), tied for third-most in a season in school history.

Three doubles teams won 22 or more matches together, capped by a school-record 26-10 mark by Koren Fleming and Gabi Vergara. Charlotte won better than 70 percent (80-34) of its doubles matches overall this season.

Vergara won an additional doubles match in the fall, giving her 27 and the school record alone. All three of Charlotte's main three doubles pairs won 22 or more matches, which was the third-most for any individual in team history prior to this season.

Charlotte finishes with a 16-5 record in 2009, tying for the fourth-best win total in school history, and tying for the most wins in six years under head coach Michaela Gorman. Charlotte has won 12 or more matches in five of the six years under Gorman. Charlotte has finished no worse than fifth in the four years in the Atlantic 10, including a second-place finish and a pair of third-place finishes.
