Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Charlotte women's team saw a pair of doubles partners make their respective draw's final, with two singles participants advancing on the opening day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama Friday. Junior Kimber Redfern had the best day-one on the squad, winning two doubles matches and her singles opening round.
Redfern and fellow junior Candace Cunningham advanced to the finals, in the silver draw. The pair took out Hall and Zachary of Mississippi State 8-6, and advanced to the final when their opponents had to withdraw due to injury in the middle of a tight semifinal match.
The freshmen pair of Julia Junker and Andrea Rivera won both of their matches in the Gold Bracket, defeating Holtzhausen and Barnhill of Tennessee Tech 8-4 in the quarterfinals. They finished off Tunaru and Meier of Kentucky 8-2 in the semifinals. The pair will face Mississippi State's Ferancova and Mayuk in the finals Saturday morning.
Charlotte's top pair of Yudeshnee Pillay and Ana Spivakovsky and won the quarterfinal match over Banikova and Tsigvintseva of Mississippi State 8-4, but the 49er tandem was outlasted 9-7 in the semifinals by McLane and Lindsey of host Alabama. They will face Nitkova and Gresova of Georgia State in the third-place match.
Senior Koren Fleming and sophomore Gabi Vergara lost both of their matches in the white bracket Friday. They were upended by de Villiers and Makarycheva of MSU by an 8-4 final. They dropped an 8-3 result to Lilley and Stone of Kentucky in their first consolation match and will take on Bochenek and Fulcher of Murray State in another consolation match on Saturday.
Seven Niners played singles matches in the afternoon session, with two advancing to their respective draw's semifinal match.
Redfern, competing in the blue draw, defeated Sarah Irvin of Memphis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to face Shelley Godwin of Alabama in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
Vergara also advanced to the semifinals in the yellow bracket, taking out Samford's Shannon Hartman by a 6-1, 6-1 result. She takes on Ashley Pierson of Murray State in the next round.
Action begins Saturday morning and concludes in the afternoon.
