Wilmington, N.C. - Every Charlotte women's tennis athlete found success either in singles, doubles or both on day one of the UNC Wilmington Invitational Tournament this weekend.
Yudeshnee Pillay and Ana Spivakovsky won their opening round singles matches in the A flight. Pillay defeated Britney Cloer of UNC Greensboro in a tiebreaking set 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Spivakovsky needed straight sets to take care of N.C. Central's Keteryna Chorna 6-4, 6-2.
In the B Flight, Charlotte got singles victories from Andrea Rivera, Kimber Redfern and Koren Fleming. Redfern needed a tiebreaker set, with Rivera and Fleming winning in straight sets.
Candace Cunningham won her singles match in straight sets in the C Flight, with Gabi Vergara taking out Carolina Farrar of UNCW in Flight D 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Charlotte was seven-for-seven for the day. In Flight A Pillay and Spivakovsky earned a bye and won their quarterfinal match over a pair from Charleston Southern. The freshmen pair of Rivera and Julia Junker needed a tiebreak to win their opening match, but won 9-7 in the quarterfinals over a Coastal Carolina pair.
In Flight B the Redfern/Cunningham combo won 8-4 in the first match and 8-3 over a Radford pair in the quarters. Fleming and Vergara won 8-3 in the opening match and was an 8-2 winner over Farrar and Laurren Fuenning of UNCW in the quarters.
