Wilmington, N.C. - Rain shortened the UNC Wilmington Invitational tournament, but a few of the Charlotte 49ers women's tennis team members were able to get some matches in this weekend.
The most successful of the bunch was freshman Iveta Guneva, who was able to win a pair of matches and advance to the C1 singles flight finals before the weather ended the weekend. Guneva won in straight sets in both of her singles matches, with neither opponent able to score more than three points in any of her four singles sets played.
Junior Gabi Vergara was in a semi-final match in the B2 singles flight, which did not finish due to the rain. She defeated North Carolina Central's Ashley Rogers 6-1, 6-2 in her only completed singles match of the weekend.
Seniors Kimber Redfern and Candace Cunningham, as well as freshmen Anna Ekelund and Ginny Johnson all finished 1-1 in a pair of weekend matches. All four singles victories were recorded in straight sets for the Niners in singles play.
Redfern and Vergara, as well as Cunningham and Ekelund won their opening doubles matches together, but were knocked out of their respective flight's title contention in the semi-final matches. Redfern and Vergara were the only pair to win a second doubles match, taking third place in an 8-6 decision in the A flight over the Weislander/Dias pairing from Mercer.
The Niners are done for the fall tournament season and will prepare for the 2010 season-opener at Wake Forest in dual match competition, which takes place on January 23 at noon.
