GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina Central University had 25 student-athletes place in the top 10, including eight in the top three and two event winners, during the running of the 2008 Murray Neely Track and Field Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. NCCU senior Maurice Gailey won a tightly-contested 200-meter dash race with a time of 21.34 seconds. The Pensacola, Fla. native edged a pair of St. Augustine's Falcons, Josh Scott (2nd, 21.36) and Sharif Nash (3rd, 21.39), and Kevin Hutton of N.C. State (4th, 21.39) by five one-hundredths of a second or less to earn the victory. NCCU junior Brandon Jones (1:52.45) beat out Norfolk State's Keenan Harris (1:52.83) by less than a half-of-a-second to win the 800m run. Finishing among the top three for NCCU were sophomore Desinia Johnson in the 1500m run (2nd, 4:53.38), junior Latasha Jones in the shot put (2nd, 12.53m/41-1.5), sophomore Christina Smith in the javelin throw (3rd, 32.12m/105-4), junior Gerald Jones in the 1500m run (3rd, 4:14.35), and junior Eric Smalls in both the shot put (3rd, 15.19m/41-10) and the discus throw (3rd, 42.01m/137-10). Other Eagles performing in the top 10 were Ashley Cooke (5th, 5:07.92) and Aisha Brown (8th, 5:10.83) in the 1500m run, Jamie Brown (4th, 12.00m/39-4.5) and Brandy Cox (7th, 10.81m/35-5.75) in the shot put, Latasha Jones (6th, 34.56m/113-5) in the discus throw, Kim Derrickson (9th, 27.70m/90-10) in the javelin throw, Jeff Rankins (6th, 10.68) in the 100m dash, Rashaad Lee (4th, 1:55.37) and Michael Edwards (6th, 1:57.11) in the 800m run, Adam Cofield (8th, 4:31.37) in the 1500m run, Charles Lindsay in both the 100m hurdles (9th, 15.00) and the 400m hurdles (9th, 54.72), Mark Davis (9th, 6.88m/22-7) in the long jump, Mack Ellis (5th, 13.47m/44-2.5) and Andrae Turner (7th, 12.88m/42-3.25) in the shot put, and Kendrick Richardson (5th, 41.20m/135-2) in the javelin throw. NCCU relay squads enjoyed much success on Saturday, as well. The Eagles won the men's 4x100m relay with a victorious time of 40.93 seconds, besting Hampton (41.33) and N.C. State (41.94). Both of NCCU's men's 4x400m foursomes finished in the top three, with the 'A' team placing second (3:20.91) and the 'B' team third (3:23.22). The NCCU women also pulled off a double top-three effort in the 4x400m relay, as the 'A' team placed second (3:55.98) and the 'B' team third (4:03.86). |
