POCATELLO, Idaho - After the first day of competition at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, the Northern Colorado women are in eighth place with eight points, while the men are ninth with three points. Idaho State leads the women's race with 54 points, while Weber State has 43 points to lead the men's standings. Sophomore Rachel Stevens earned all-conference honors after finishing third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-6. Sophomore Katie McConnell tied for ninth after she cleared 5-2.25. Senior Tali Slafter placed seventh in the long jump with her leap of 18-3.75. Sophomore Justine Sandersfeld ran a 57.17 to qualify for tomorrow's final in the 400 meters, while freshman Kelly Coomes clocked an 8.99 in the 60 meter hurdles to advance to the finals. On the men's side senior Jeff Vaden placed seventh in the long jump after leaping 22-6.25 and Richard Mattison was ninth at 22-1. Junior Patrick Berg placed eighth in the weight throw with his toss of 53-2.75. Freshman Terrence McGaughy ran a 6.95 in the preliminaries of the 60 meters to advance to the finals. This is the second-ever Big Sky Championship for NC as the Bears joined the league last year and were not eligible to compete in the outdoor championship due to the post-season advancement of champions. The meet concludes tomorrow at Idaho State. Events are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon. Open events get underway at 10:30 with the women's weight throw and the first open event on the track is at 12:05 with the women's mile. |
