BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Northern Colorado track & field teams got their season started at the annual Potts Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado on Saturday. The Bears brought home six titles in the first week.

 

Patrick Berg finished second in the shot put with a throw of 52-4.75, fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 164-7 and fourth in the discus at 158-5 for a great first meet showing.

 

Senior Jeff Vaden won the long jump with a leap of 21-11.5, while Richard Mattison was third with a jump of 21-3.5. In the triple jump, Tyler Short finished second with his leap of 41-3.25. Vaden also finished third in the 110 meter hurdles after running a 15.40 and Tyler Hoerner tied for second with his time of 48.36.

 

The men's 4x100 relay team of Vaden, Collin Effler, Tyler Hoerner and Terrence McGaughy won with a clocking of 41.50. The 4x400 relay team Hoerner, Stanford, Josh Keahey and Effler finished second in 3:24.36.

 

McGaughy placed third in the 100 meters in 10.76 and second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.40, while Travis Stanford was third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.02. Marty Wittmer placed second in the 400 hurdles after running a 55.24.

 

Rachel Stevens won the women's high jump with a clearing of 5-5, while Katie McConnell was second at 5-3. Tali Slafter and Brianna Plombon finished second and third with leaps of 17-11 and 16-0.25, respectively in the long jump.

 

Justine Sandersfeld's solid indoor season has carried over to the outdoor season, as she was victorious in the 400 meters in 56.01. Jillian Hoblitt and Lauren Iseman were third and fourth in 58.47 and 59.48, respectively. Freshman Kelly Coomes clocked a 14.60 in the women's 100 meter hurdles to place third and Lisa Drew won the 800 meters in 2:19.12. Ashley Stec finished second overall behind her own coach Cathleen Campbell in the 400 hurdles, as she clocked a 1:04.48.

 

The 1600 meter relay squad of Hoblitt, Iseman, Stec and Sandersfeld won the race in 3:56.75, while the B team of Keira Moczulski, Brianna Spletstoser, Shannon Hageman and Drew was third in 4:10.89.
