Portland State Shoots Way Past Women's Basketball

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland State University hardly missed a shot in the first half and the University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team lost an 82-60 decision because of it. The Vikings remained perfect at home this season and moved to 19-7 on the year and 9-4 in Big Sky Conference play while the Bears move to 11-13 on the year and 5-6 in league action.

Portland State shot .560 for the game and .640 in the first half, building as much as a 14-point lead in the first half, but the Bears went on a run before the break to cut it to seven, 41-34. NC could get no closer in the second half as the Vikings continued to shoot well.

Junior guard Jaime Schroeder continued to play well for the Bears, leading the team with 19 points and six rebounds, while senior center Danielle Hagen chipped in 17 points and freshman guard Kate Kevorken scored 10, all in the first half. Hagen and freshman guard Courtney Stoermer each had three assists to lead the team, while Stoermer also tallied four steals.

"You lose the edge when you have some time off and there was no forgiveness here tonight," said Head Coach Jaime White talking about how tonight was the team's first game in nine days. "We could not stop Delaney Conway, she had a game-and-a-half and has been playing very well lately for Portland State."

"Jamie (Schroeder) did a good job posting up and attacking the basket," continued White. "Kate (Kevorken) had a first good half, helped us get back in the game late in the first half. We were just a little flat tonight and we're running out of gas. We're going to have to hold our own and play a full 40 minutes to win and we've only done that once this season - the game against Portland State at our place."

Conway led Portland State with a career-high 31 points, hitting 11-of-12 from the floor. Kelli Valentine scored 14 and Kelly Marchant chipped in 12 in the Vikings win. Claire Faucher led the team with six rebounds and 11 assists, while Valentine and Marchant each had three steals.

The Vikings led the entire contest leading by as many as 24 with 3:41 left in the game. They also out-rebounded the Bears 29-23 and had just 12 turnovers, compared to 18 for Northern Colorado.

The Bears conclude the road portion of their season at Eastern Washington on Saturday. The game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (Eastern)/3:05 (Mountain).
