Former Irish Track Standout Chamney to Represent Ireland in Beijing
July 22, 2008
DUBLIN, Ireland -
Former Notre Dame track standout Thomas Chamney has been chosen to represent his native Ireland in the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing next month.
Chamney, a four-time monogram winner, was a three-time All-American in the 800 meters, garnering both indoor and outdoor honors in 2006 and a second indoor citation in 2007.
Chamney was the 2006 NCAA Mideast Regional Champion in the 800 meters and has four BIG EAST titles, including back-to-back 800-meter indoor championships in 2006 and 2007. He was also a member of the indoor 4x800-meter relay team that took top honors in 2006 and 2007. Chamney racked up 11 All-BIG EAST honors (five indoor, six outdoor) on the way to becoming one of Notre Dame's most decorated track athletes.
Also a standout in the classroom, Chamney was twice named an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American, joining the first team in 2007 and the third team in 2006.
"Thomas was a BIG EAST Champion and All-American many times and was a great student-athlete for us," Notre Dame Track and Field Head Coach Joe Piane said. "This is one major step toward reaching his Olympic goals."
Chamney will be one of sixteen track and field athletes representing Ireland at this year's games, which begin Aug. 8.
