No. 22 Irish Pull Out 174-126 Win Against Oakland

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In its first home dual meet of the new year the Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team earned a 174-126 win over Oakland at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Saturday.

The win moves Notre Dame's record to 3-4 on the season with a Jan. 18 home meet with Louisville ahead next.

John Lytle, Ross Moore, and Michael Bulfin each won a pair of events as the 22nd-ranked Irish registered 10 individual victories overall.

"We never know what to expect coming out of training camp, so we wanted to use this meet as a measuring stick," said Irish head coach Tim Welsh. "We'll take a very close look at not only the times, but how we got those times. It was a solid meet, and we got a good look at the team across each of the events."

200 Medley Relay: Kicking things off with a second-place finish was the tandem of Jeff Wood, Sam Pendergast, Moore, and Andrew Hoffman (1:32.96) ... Mitchell Sherman, Eric Swenson, MacKenzie LeBlanc, and Thomas VanVolkenburg were fourth in 1:36.60.

1,000 Free: A one-two-three finish for Notre Dame started with Michael Sullivan (9:40.20) ... next were Christopher Douville (9:42.67) and Steven Brus (9:58.54).

 

 

200 Free: The first of Lytle's two wins came in this event after he finished in 1:41.08 ... Danny Lutkus (1:47.21) was third and Rob Seery (1:47.99) was fourth.

100 Back: Christopher Wills notched the win in 52.18 ... third place went to Bill Bauman (53.28) ... Joshua Nosal (54.02) was a spot behind him.

100 Breast: Pendergast (57.56) was second, finishing between a pair of Golden Grizzlies ... Swenson (1:01.72) was the next Irish swimmer to touch the wall to take fifth.

200 Fly: Moore bested the pack with a time of 1:51.59 ... after Aaron Holdsworth (1:54.30) of Oakland touched second, Patrick Augustyn (1:54.61) and Andrew Deters (1:55.75) took the following two positions.

50 Free: Hoffman sprinted his way to the gold in 21.31.

100 Free: Lytle snagged another win with a 46.27 performance ... Hoffman was two spots back after legging it out with a 47.58.

200 Back: Wood (1:54.24) and Sullivan (1:54.67) finished second and third, respectively ... Douville (1:57.69) and Wills (1:59.48) were next in line.

200 Breast: Daniel Rave (2:07.70) checked in with a silver performance ... Peter Koppel (2:11.35) earned points with a fourth-place finish.

500 Free: Andrew Deters (4:38.22) coasted to a first-place finish ... he was trailed by Nosal, who was a few lengths behind at 4:43.37.

100 Fly: Moore came out on top once again with a mark of 50.44 ... Augustyn (52.31) and LeBlanc (53.42) were third and fourth, respectively.

200 Individual Medley: Wills willed his way to a third-place finish with a time of 2:01.48 ... Joseph Raycroft was in close pursuit, tapping in one spot back at 2:02.10.

400 Free Relay: Notre Dame's highest finishing squad - featuring Patrick Lloyd, Seery, Pendergast, and Lutkus - placed third in 3:15.14.

3-meter Diving: The top four finishers were Bulfin (380.62), Sam Stoner (340.12), Eric Lex (328.35), and Nathan Geary (324.00).

1-meter Diving: Bulfin (327.82) ousted the crowd once again ... Lex (318.30), Stoner (308.25) and Crowe (295.42) were the next highest scorers for Notre Dame.
