Feb. 7, 2008
MADISON, Wis. -
The 19th-ranked Notre Dame women's tennis squad lost in the first round of the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Thursday, falling to No. 6 Georgia, 4-2, in the four-day tournament. Even with the loss, the Irish will still have more competitions, entering now into the consolation draw.
The Irish started out down, losing the doubles point with only the No. 3 duo of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft taking away a win. The pair knocked down Kelley Hyndman and Monika Dancevic, the No. 36 combination in collegiate doubles, with a solid 8-2 victory.
Kali Krisik once again came away with a quick win for the Irish. The No. 89 singles player in the country defeated Adrianne Elsberry with the easy 6-2, 6-2 win. With the score evened up, 1-1, Tefft went on to earn another win for Notre Dame, giving the Irish a 2-1 edge. Her defeat over Dancevic was a close battle in the first set, Tefft winning 7-6 (7). It was in the second set that Tefft cruised past her opponent, winning the match with a 6-2 victory for the final set.
The win would be the last for the Irish as the next three singles wins would go to Georgia to clinch the victory, 4-2. Notre Dame's record falls to 2-3, while the Bulldogs remain undefeated in dual competition this season, boasting a 4-0 record.
