LAKE CHARLES, La. - After blustery conditions on the 7,233-yard, par 72, Gray Plantation course in Lake Charles, La., junior Marty Reed fired a one-over par 73, which puts him tied for fifth, trailing the leaders by only one stroke.

Four players, each representing a different squad, share a lead for the medalist honors after the opening round. Hugues Joannes of Lamar, Corey Roberson of Texas State, Eddie Brescher III of Southeastern Louisiana and Zack Reeves of UT-Arlington each parred the course at 72.

After finishing third in the regular season, Sam Houston State ended day one of the 2008 Southland Conference Men's Golf Tournament one stroke ahead of traditional favorite the 28th ranked Lamar Cardinals.
