Feb. 19, 2008 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Colonel men's tennis squad fell 6-1 at Memphis Friday afternoon, but picked up a 6-1 win vs. Lipscomb on Saturday to improve to 6-3 on the season. In Friday's match, Memphis swept the doubles point. Radu Ionescu/Vlad Popa fell 8-5 at No. 1 to Amrit Narasimhan/Charlie Ramsay. At No. 2 doubles, Eric Fisher/Phenyo Matong dropped the match 8-5 to Leon Naseman/Jimmy Khougassian, while Chris Hernandez/Sami Mouline lost 9-8 in a tiebreaker match to Jordan Smith/Benedikt Fischer at No. 3. Fisher picked up the only win of the day for the Colonels, defeating Smith in the No. 3 singles match 6-7, 6-2, 10-8. At No. 1 singles, Ionescu fell 6-1, 6-2 to Narasimhan. Popa lost the No. 2 match 7-5, 6-2 to Naseman, while Matong dropped his No. 4 match with M. Gaerthoeffner 7-5, 6-3. At No. 5, Alex Gasca-Silav lost 6-0, 6-2 to Ramsay, with Hernandez falling 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 to Fischer. Saturday's match was another story, as the Colonels rebounded to defeat Lipscomb. Nicholls won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Ionescu/Popa defeated Daniel Hangstefer/Mario Hernandez 8-4 at No. 1, while Fisher/Matong won 8-2 over Josh Cummings/Andy Mizell at No. 2. Mouline/Hernandez captured an 8-6 victory over Joe McArdle/Jeff West at No. 3 doubles. Ionescu won the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Hangstefer. Popa defeated West 6-4, 6-2, while Fisher picked up his second singles win of the weekend with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cummings. At No. 4 singles, Matong claimed a 7-6, 6-2 win over Hernandez, and Gasca-Silav defeated McArdle 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 at No. 5. In the only loss of the day for the Colonels, Rohan Shetty fell 7-6, 4-6, 6-7 to James Murrell at No. 6 singles. Nicholls returns to the courts this weekend, hosting Texas-Pan American on Friday at 1 p.m. ###### |
