1972 Baseball Team, Goeden, Hinchee, Mucci, Satchwell Inducted into Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame
DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois University Intercollegiate Athletics will enshrine one team and four individuals into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, October 17 as part of the Huskies' gala 102nd Homecoming weekend.
The formal induction ceremonies will once again take place at the Duke Ellington Ballroom in NIU's Leslie Holmes Student Center on campus, Northern Illinois associate vice president and director of athletics Jeff Compher announced. NIU's 2008 induction class---the 27th overall since the inception of the Huskie Athletics Hall of Fame and the 30th anniversary of the charter HOF group in 1978---features the 1972 baseball team, plus individuals Jeremy Goeden (wrestling in 1996-98), Tammy Hinchee (basketball in 1986-90), Anne Mucci (Iwinski) (soccer in 1995-98), and Larry Satchwell (track & field in 1974-75). "Heartiest congratulations to our newest Hall of Fame inductees," said Compher. "While I may be, so to speak, the new guy on the block, I certainly understand the significance of such an honor. The team and individual accomplishments of these inductees are awe-inspiring. Not only is such Hall of Fame recognition well-deserved, but their stories provide great examples for our current Northern Illinois student-athletes. I look forward to meeting our old and new Hall of Fame inductees. From my understanding, our induction banquet has a great Cardinal and Black history and flavor." As in the past, the Friday evening NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Banquet precedes the 102nd Homecoming Game on Saturday (October 18) against Mid-American Conference rival University of Toledo at 3 p.m. (CDT) on Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium. In addition, the new Northern Illinois Hall of Famers will be honored on the field at halftime of the NIU-UT contest. Fans, friends, Northern Illinois alumni, and the general public are invited to attend the HOF induction on Friday night. The festive Cardinal and Black evening begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. (CDT), followed by dinner at 7 p.m., and the induction program at 8 p.m. If you RSVP by Friday (October 3), induction banquet tickets cost $40 apiece for the buffet dinner. After that date, the cost for the banquet is $50. Table sponsorships---seating eight individuals---are available for $500 apiece. For further information on the banquet or to RSVP, please contact Matt Mattmiller in NIU Athletics Development via telephone (AC 815-753-5510) or via e-mail For the 23rd consecutive year, Bill Baker---the voice of Northern Illinois football and basketball on the Huskie Radio Network since 1980---will serve as banquet emcee.
As per tradition, many past NIU Hall of Fame inductees will attend the ceremony and be introduced. Expected to attend this year's banquet will be T. C. Dantzler, a two-sport NIU standout in football and wrestling who qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling at age 37. Dantzler was inducted in 2004.
This year's Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee included NIU Sports Information Director Emeritus Mike Korcek as chair, plus Cliff Bottigliero, Bill Finucane, Andrea Hein, Donna Martin, Dave Mason, Chuck Morgan, Don Shields, and Donald Whiteside. Finucane, Korcek, Martin, and Whiteside are previous Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame inductees.
The Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame originated in 1978 with the charter induction class. After a five-year hiatus, the HOF has enshrined a class on an annual basis since 1983. The NIU women's athletics Hall of Fame started in 1986 and the two halls were integrated in 1988. Including the the 2008 inductees, the current Northern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame roster includes 179 individuals and 14 teams.
The process for the 2009 induction class begins next spring. To nominate deserving individuals (student-athletes, coaches, administrators, etc.) or teams for future NIU Athletics Hall of Fame consideration, please contact Korcek via telephone (AC 815-753-9559), via mail (SID Emeritus, Convocation Center, NIU, 1525 West Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, IL 60115), or via e-mail Northern Illinois University's 2008 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees:
