DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois put together a late rally but it was not enough to overcome an early five-run deficit in a 9-5 loss to Kent State, who avoided a series sweep, Sunday afternoon at Ralph McKinzie Field. Despite pounding out 13 hits in the game, the Huskies fell to 12-15 overall and 5-4 in the MAC. NIU scored the game's first run when a RBI groundout by Matt Behren (Elmwood Park, Ill./Holy Cross) plated Danny Reed (Lindstrom, Minn./North Iowa Area CC). Kent State took the lead with a four-run third that began with a two-run home run by Doug Sanders and extended the margin to 6-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Huskies got a run in fourth when Reed scored on a fielder's choice to cut the margin back to four. After the Golden Flashes scored a run in the eighth that made it 7-2, the Huskies staged a rally in the bottom of the inning and put up three before leaving the bases loaded. An infield single by Pat Minogue (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) scored Justin Behm (Downers Grove, Ill./North) before Dave Reynolds (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) drew NIU within two with a RBI single that scored Brian Smith (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Richards) and Tim Kamin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards). Kent State added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to provide the final 9-5 margin. Kyle Smith (4-1) got the win for KSU (11-15, 1-5), going 6.1 innings with two earned runs, one walk and five strikeouts, before Jon Pokorny notched his third save of the year. NIU starter Matt Jernstad (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) took the loss. Hood had three hits and Reed scored two runs to lead the Huskie offense. Northern Illinois returns to action Tuesday at Illinois State at 6 p.m. before a Wednesday afternoon contest at Valparaiso. The Huskies next home game is Friday, the first of a three-game set, against Akron. HUSKIE TRACKS -NIU-
