Central Michigan 80, Northern Illinois 73 in PDF Format
DeKalb, Ill. - Despite a double-double of 23 points and a team-season high 11 boards from freshman guard Darion Anderson (Chicago, Ill./Carver Military Academy), Northern Illinois was unable to overcome a 65.2% (30-for-46) performance from the free throw line as Central Michigan earned the 80-73 Mid-American Conference victory over the Huskies on Senior Day at the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Central Michigan sophomore forward Marko Spica led the Chippewas with 19 points, followed by 18 points from Giordan Watson and 13 points from freshman guard Jeremy Allen.
While NIU struggled from the free throw line, the Chippewas made the most of their attempts from the charity stripe, knocking down 78.8% (26-for-33) of their attempts. Spica and Watson combined to shoot 94.1% (16-for-17) from the line.
With the victory, Central Michigan improves to 12-15 overall and 7-7 in MAC play, while the Huskies fall to 6-19 on the season and 3-10 in conference action.
One successful Huskie at the free throw line on Saturday was junior guard Jarvis Nichols (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North/Pratt C.C.). Nichols drained all 11 of his free throw attempts, tying a school-record for free throw percentage, and finished with 17 points on the afternoon. The Carol Stream, Ill., native has converted his last 27 attempts from the charity stripe. Huskie freshman guard Michael Patton (Boulder, Colo./Boulder/Solebury School (PA)) finished with 14 points.
NIU is back in action on Tuesday, March 4, as they travel to Muncie, Indiana to square off with Ball State for a 6 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
