NIU Volleyball Finishes Spring Competition

Two-time Second-Team All-MAC performer Meagan Schoenrock leads the Huskies into the 2008 season.

April 28, 2008

DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois volleyball team wrapped-up its spring schedule with a 14-10 record in three different tournaments, including a 6-2 performance at the Salvani Spring Playdate, which the Huskies hosted at the NIU Recreation Center.

"We went into the spring with a lot of questions," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. "A lot of them are answered now and in a good way. However, some questions remain and a few more were created in a good way as well. We played against stronger competition than we have in the past. That was good and we had some positive results."

The Huskies began their spring with that 6-2 record in the Salvani Spring Playdate at the NIU Rec Center. NIU then traveled to Chicago, Ill. for the University of Illinois-Chicago spring tournament, splitting 10 matches for a 5-5 record. Finally, the Huskies ended their spring in Evanston, Ill. at the Northwestern spring tournament where NIU went 3-3 to put the overall Huskie spring record at 14-10.

"Some people really shined this spring," said Gooden. "Without question, Cassie Yates had her best spring. I thought Amanda Tadla did a really good job. Meagan Schoenrock made some pretty big improvements, too. As a group, we improved a good deal. We did some good things, especially in the weight room and on the court as well."

NIU returns two-time Second-Team All-Mid-American Conference selection Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and Academic All-MAC honoree Irene Johnson (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) for the upcoming 2008 season.
