            BRADENTON, Fla. -- The University of Northern Iowa baseball team used 19 hits to roll to a 17-8 win over Miami (Ohio) in Bradenton, Fla., Sunday night.

            Guido Fonseca earned the win for the Panthers, his third of the season. Brett Douglas was 3-of-3 from the plate with four RBIs. Cory Ege was 2-of-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Brett Featherston was 3-of-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

            Miami scored in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Panthers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and another three in the bottom of the third to build a 5-1 lead.

            The Redhawks scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut UNI's lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers strung together for hits to score four runs and stretch their lead to 9-3.


 

 

            Miami scored a trio of runs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers were able to send 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight runs and extending their lead to 17-6.

            The Redhawks scored a run in both the seventh and the eighth innings, but the Panthers were able to hold on for the win.

            UNI returns to action on Monday when it plays Ohio State at 6:30 p.m.
