Fighting Illini Invite Day 1 Results

 

 

The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team stands tied for fifth place after the opening day of competition at the Fighting Illini Spring Invitational in Urbana, Ill.

 

The Panthers finished the opening round of play with an overall team score of 316, after the first 18 holes of competition. De Paul University leads the ranks with a score of 304 and the Blue Demon's Cory Blenkush stands in first place individually with a two-over-par score of 74.

 

Sophomore Kyle Bermel (Keota, Iowa/Keota) led the Panthers for the first time this season tying for fifth-place individually after the first 18 holes. Bermel fired an opening score of 76, posting a pair of 38s on the front and back nine holes. The sophomore shot three birdies on the day.

 

Senior Andy White (Keosauqua, Iowa/Van Buren) stands tied for 24th place with a score of 79, after carding a 39 on the front nine and following up with a 40 on the back nine.

 

Brook Maher (Monroe, Iowa/Prairie City-Monroe) is currently tied for 28th place with a score of 80. The senior shot a pair of 40s on the front and back nine.

 

Senior Jordan Weber (Bernard, Iowa/Cascade) struggled on the first day of play and is tied for 34th place with an overall score of 81.

 

The two-day Fighting Illini tournament was originally set for 54 holes but due to inclement weather it was reduced to 36 holes. Teams completed 27 holes Saturday and will wrap up the tournament Sunday with the final 9 holes beginning at 8 a.m.
