THIS WEEK IN PANTHER MEN'S GOLF

March 21-23: Ron Moore Invitational - Goodyear, Ariz.

The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team kicks off its spring season at the Ron Moore Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz., this Friday through Sunday. The invitational, hosted by the University of Denver will be played on the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club. The invitational will consist of 17 teams and 27 individual competitors with two separate tournaments, one for the teams and a separate one for the individuals. Tee times for the 54-hole event are slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday morning. The final 18 holes will begin Sunday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

TEEING OFF

During the fall season the University of Northern Iowa men's golf team competed in six tournaments. The team finished within the top 10 at each contest.

Their highest finish was at the John Dallio Memorial (Oct.1-2) in Lemont, Ill., where they took second place honors. Senior Jordan Weber led the Panthers at the tournament with a first-place finish, taking home top honors with a one-over-par score of 217. His outstanding performance also earned him Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week.

The Panthers continued their fall success finishing fourth at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8), led by senior Brook Maher. Maher continually showed improvment throughout the season as he tied for fourth at the Weibring Intercollegiate. Maher recorded his lowest round of the fall season at the invite, with a second-round score of 71.

UNI also saw success at the Agua-Caliente Air Force Invite (Nov. 10-11) in Palm Springs, Calif. The team finished in third place, propelled by top-10 finishes from Weber, Blake Hibben, and Troy Hoffman. Weber finished in seventh place and fired a season-low 64 with an all-around score of 198, 18 strokes under par. His performance earned him the honor of MVC Golfer of the Week for the second time during the fall season. Hibben and Hoffman also paced the Panthers, tying for eighth place with identical scores of 200.

The Panthers look to continue their success into the spring season with strong performances from Weber, Maher and senior Andy White. Hibben and Hoffman will also play key roles and junior Eric Sipple and sophomore Kyle Bermel will battle to get into the top five.

LOOKING AT THE WEEK AHEAD

The Panther men head south to Goodyear, Ariz., to compete in the Ron Moore Invitational. The three-day tournament will be held at the Palm Valley Golf Club, a par-72 course that stretches 7,015 yards. The two 18-hole facilities (36 holes total) was designed by renowned golf architect Arthur Hills. The excellent layout provides a stiff challenge for experienced golfers yet also caters to beginners. The golf course is best known for its ninth hole, being cited as one of the best par-fives in the state. The Phoenix Business Journal has also rated the Palm Valley Golf Course as one of the best in Arizona.
