THIS WEEK IN PANTHER MEN'S GOLF

April 21-22: State Farm MVC Championships - Davenport, Iowa

The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team wraps up its spring season at the State Farm MVC Championships in Davenport, Iowa, this Monday and Tuesday (April 21-22). The Panthers will host the tournament at the Davenport Country Club. The nine-team field will play 36 holes over the course of the two days, beginning with a shot-gun start at 8 a.m. Monday. The final 18-hole round will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

2008 MVC MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wichita State has been picked to win the 2008 State Farm MVC Men's Golf Championship according to a pre-championship poll of league coaches. The Shockers have been the league's most dominant program in the past decade, finishing first or second (with six titles) in each of the last 11 seasons. The team is led by MVC Player of the Year candidate Ryan Spears, who has led the Shockers to six tournament titles this season.

• Defending conference champion, Illinois State, is picked second in this year's pre-championship poll. The Redbirds have won two of the past three MVC championships. Meanwhile, the defending tournament medalist John Sutko returns after becoming the first Creighton medalist since 1938.

• UNI is expected to have its highest finish in years as the Panthers are picked third in this year's poll. The Panthers are led by one of the league's best players, Jordan Weber.

• Wichita State's Ryan Spears leads the league with a 71 stroke average. He is followed closely by UNI's Jordan Weber with a 71.1 average and defending 2007 champion John Sutko from Creighton with a 72.4 average. Spears also leads the field with most individual titles won this season after bringing home three first-place medals.

LAST TIME AROUND
• At the 2008 MVC Championships Creighton junior John Sutko won the individual title. Sutko won the Bluejays first individual conference championship since 1938 (Bob Fraser).

• Illinois State fired a three-round score of 283-289-281=853 to win the league golf title for the second time in three years.

TEEING OFF
The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team finished with a strong performance at the Fighting Illini Spring Invitational (April 12-13) on the Stone Creek Country Club with a third-place tie.

The Panthers closed out the tournament with a solid second-round score of 304 to finish with an overall score of 620, along with Eastern Illinois. The University of Illinois finished in first place with a score of 609. The Fighting Illini's Matt Hoffman took home first-place individual honors after firing a 148, including a second round score of 73.

The duo of Jordan Weber and Andy White led the Panthers with a 13th-place tie. They each shot an overall score of 155. Weber struggled in the first day of play with a first round score of 81, but countered in the second round with a low of 74. White shot a low round of 76 in the second round.

Sophomore Kyle Bermel and Brook Maher each tied for 24th place, carding identical scores of 158. Bermel shot a second round score of 82 and Maher posted a low of 78.

Blake Hibben shot a second round score of 76 on the final day of competition.

The two-day Fighting Illini tournament was originally set for 54 holes but due to inclement weather it was reduced to 36 holes.
