Senior Brook Maher was named to the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete First Team the league announced today. Maher holds a cumulative 3.75 grade point average while majoring in Pre-Medicine.

The senior competed in seven events this season, completing 18 rounds. His top performance came at the Weibring Intercollegiate (Oct. 7-8), tying for fourth place after carding a low-round score of 68. He also posted a low-round score of 68 at the Agua-Caliente Invite (Nov. 10-11).

During the season, Maher recorded 14 rounds in the 70s and was ranked 20th in the Valley with an average 74.8 strokes. He led the Panthers with the best GPA on the team, 3.75 and has made the Dean's List all four semesters while attending UNI.

Prior to attending UNI, Maher was a two-time National Qualifier while attending Kirkwood Community College and earned a 74.5 stroke average over his sophomore season.

A total of seven student-athletes earned first-team scholar-athlete honors, and an additional four earned honorable-mention status. Three repeat selections also highlight the 2008 team; Damaso Carrera of Missouri State, Matt Hunsaker of Evansville and Matt Kouri

The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic ESPN the Magazine All-America voting.  Nominees must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale), while the student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's rounds or played at the State Farm MVC Championship.

A total of 18 student-athletes were nominated for men's golf scholar-athlete honors.  Golf sports information directors in the conference voted for the award.
