TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team dropped an 11-4 contest to Indiana State Sunday afternoon. The Sycamores put 11 runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win.

 

UNI put the first runs on the board in the top of the third on an Ashley Lepley (Albia, Iowa/Albia) home run. The Panthers added three runs in the top of the fourth to build a 4-0 lead. Jen Larsen (Moline, Ill./Moline) opened the frame with a single to right field. Rachel Gerking (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) followed with a single to center field. Crystal Keiper then hit a RBI single, and advanced to second on the throw. Morgan Paulson (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge) reached on an error by the center fielder, allowing Gerking to score. Kelly Papesh (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) connected for a single to center field, scoring Keiper and putting the Panthers up 4-0.


 

 

 

Indiana State then converted six hits into six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 6-4 lead. UNI was unable to plate any runs in the top of the sixth while the Sycamore bats heated up. Indiana State added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-4 lead.

 

Megan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa/Central), Larsen, and Keiper all the finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate for the Panthers. Larsen took the loss for the Panthers, tossing four innings. Katie Armour earned the win for the Sycamores.

 

UNI (16-23, 3-12 MVC) returns home to host a doubleheader with North Dakota State Tuesday April 22 at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
