Jan. 26, 2008
MOORHEAD, Minn.-The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming team won 11 events and broke seven pool records Saturday as the Panthers defeated host Minnesota State University-Moorhead, 168-126. The Panthers first victory of the afternoon came in the 1,000-yard freestyle, which the Panthers swept for the second meet in a row. This time it was junior Melissa Little (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) who captured the title in 11:07.23, while setting an Alex Nemzek pool record. Freshman Kelly McCullough (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) was close behind with a time of 11:12.73, before winning her own title in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.45). Fellow-freshman, and last night's 1,000 free winner, April Mangrich (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) placed third in the event, with a time of 11:25.17.
UNI also swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) set a pool record in the event, which she won in a time of 5:21.63. April Mangrich took second place (5:29.50), while Little finished third (5:31.48). Freshman Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley once again. Itzen won the event for the third-straight meet in a time of 2:15.05. She also won the 100 and 200 freestyles in 55.17 and 1:58.74, respectively. Both of these times are pool records. Sophomore Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) won the 50-yard freestyle title, which helped the Panthers win all of the meet's freestyle events. She did so in a time of 25.67. Senior Jamie Keefer (Spencer, Iowa/Spencer) took third-place honors, with a time of 26.17. Rickert also won the 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:01.37. Another strong point for the Panthers was the backstroke. Junior Abby Moes (Sioux City, Iowa/East) clocked in at 1:01.19 in the 100 back, edging out Girard for the title. Keefer finished third in the event with a time of 1:05.41, while freshman Jessica Robinson (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) took fourth place in a time of 1:07.23. Moes also won the 200 back (2:11.58), just ahead of second-place finisher McCullough (2:17.18). Both of Moes' times were pool records as well. The Panthers final pool record of the day came in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Girard, junior Alexa Armstrong (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead), junior Maegan Miller (Olathe, Kan./Olathe) and Rickert teamed up to win the event in a time of 1:42.27.
