CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa women's swimming team won 13 events Saturday afternoon as they earned 196 points in their final home meet.  Grinnell finished with 76, while Morningside earned 19.

 

Sophomore Abby Girard led the way for the Panthers by winning two individual titles.  Girard's first victory came in the 100-yard backstroke, which she won in a time of 59.59.  Senior Jamie Keefer finished third in the event (1:05.56), while Jessica Robinson came in fourth (1:07.80).

 

Girard was later part of a Panther sweep of the 100 freestyle.  She clocked in at 54.36 to win the event ahead of sophomore Maggie Rickert and junior Maegan Miller.


 

 

 

The Panthers also swept four other events.

 

Freshman Ashley Mangrich won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:10.46.  Sophomore Andrea Grandcolas came in second (1:11.29), while freshman Caitlin Krengel finished third (1:11.59).

 

Sophomore Maggie Rickert swam a time of 25.61 to win the 50 free.  Close behind was Keefer (25.81) and junior Alexa Armstrong (25.92).

 

Sophomore Kelly Mateas finished the 500 free in a time of 5:27.23, earning first-place honors.  Junior Melissa Little finished second (5:28.27) and junior Katie Maloy finished third (5:32.42).

 

The Panthers final sweep was in the 400 individual medley.  Freshman Josie Itzen won the event in a time of 4:46.16, while fellow-freshmen Kelly McCullough (4:48.39) and April Mangrich (5:52.67) were right behind.

 

Itzen also won the 200 free in a time of 1:57.65.  She earned runner-up honors in the 200 breast as well, finishing in a time of 2:35.25.  Grandcolas was close behind with a time of 2:35.71, finishing third.

 

The Panthers also won both of the butterfly events.

 

Krengel won the 100 fly title in 1:02.29, with junior Melissa Kilfoy finishing third (1:04.11).

 

McCullough clocked in at 2:17.83 to finish first in the 200 fly.  Freshman Tori Ward came in third (2:22.15), while Kilfoy finished fourth (2:25.80).

 

Other Panther victories came in the 1,650 free and 200 back.

 

Little finished in a time of 18:29.60 to win the 1,650, while junior Abby Moes won the 200 back in 2:11.32.

 

The Panthers also won both of the relay events.

 

The 200 medley relay team consisting of Girard, Ashley Mangrich, Rickert and Miller won in a time of 1:54.30.  The team of Moes, Grandcolas, Keefer and Armstrong came in second, with a time of 1:55.63.

 

The Panther squad of Girard, Armstrong, Miller and Rickert won the 400 freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:42.79.

 

UNI will have nearly two weeks off to prepare for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Feb. 14-16.  The meet will be held in Carbondale, Ill., with times to be announced later.
