Iowa City, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team struggled in their spring season opener at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, losing every match of the day.

 

In singles competition UNI lost all six matches against Iowa State. UNI senior Meghana Paritala lost in No. 1 singles play 6-0, 6-3 against Erin Karonis. Alyssa Palen took care of the Panthers sophomore Sampada Kanade in No. 2 singles play 6-2, (4-6), 10-6. Playing in her first match as a Panther freshman Laia Gonzalez-Garrido came up short falling to Caitlin Loprinzi. 6-3, 7-6, while Taynara Moraes was topped by Chrissy Derouin 6-4, 6-4. Senior Carolina Hannes lost to Liza Wischer 6-1 6-3, and freshman Diana Mendez fell to Reka Keleman 6-0, 6-3.


 

 

 

In doubles play, the Panthers lost all four doubles matches against No. 51-ranked Iowa. The UNI duo of Kanade and Moraes fell to Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr 8-5. The Panthers No. 2 doubles squad of Paritala and Ashton Schwerin lost to Milica Veselinovic and Merel Beelen 8-1. Playing in the No. 3 doubles spot UNI's Hannes and Gonzalez-Garrido were topped 8-2 by Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei. The Panthers Samantha Schnobel and Mendez were also unable to come up with a victory losing 8-2 against Kelcie Klockenga and Jennifer Barnes 8-2.

 

"Obviously we had a tough day today, but we fought hard and lost some close matches today. We just need to regroup and play with more intensity tomorrow," head coach Sachin Kirtane said.

 

The Panthers will play doubles againt Iowa State tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. following with singles play against Iowa.
