Final Stats

Waterloo, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team started its dual season on the right note, sweeping UMKC 7-0.

 

"This was a good start to our dual meet season, and we had a good, solid performance," head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "We need to keep this going and be mentally prepared to compete tomorrow morning against Western Illinois."

 

The Panthers won all six singles matches easily, with sophomore Sampada Kanade (Mumbai, India) leading the way with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over UMKC's Chelsea Horner in No. 1 singles play. Senior Meghana Paritala (Secunderabad, India) recorded her 76th career win in her No. 2 singles match defeating Akshara Reddy 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Laia Gonzalez-Garrido (Vinaros, Spain) recorded her first career win as a Panther topping Emily Lindsay 6-3, 6-4. Junior Taynara Moraes (Santos, Brazil) rolled past Caitlin Burke 6-1, 6-1, while senior Carolina Hannes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Holly Davis 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Diana Mendez (Bogota, Colombia) completed the singles sweep in dominating fashion beating Megan Titus 6-0, 6-0.    


 

 

 

The only close call on the evening came in No. 1 doubles play with the Panther duo of Kanade and Moraes holding off the tandem of Horner and Lindsay 8-7 (7-3 super tie-break). Freshman Ashton Schwerin (Madison, Wis.) teamed with Paritala to top the Kangaroos' Burke and Reddy 8-1. UNI's Hannes and Gonzalez-Garrido rolled past Nicole Kofron and Titus 8-0.

 

The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. against Western Illinois at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
