Final Stats

Waterloo, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team swept South Dakota 7-0 at the Black Hawk Tennis Club and improved its record to 5-1 on the season.

 

The Panthers returned to its winning ways after suffering their first loss of the season last Sunday at Marquette. UNI did not drop a set all night and dominated in singles play, only losing four total points.

 

"We had a really solid performance tonight and responded well after losing our first match of the season," head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "Hopefully this is a start to a good weekend for us."

 


 

 

Junior Taynara Moraes and sophomore Sampada Kanade topped South Dakota State's Kate and Emma Wylie 8-3 in No. 1 doubles play, and senior Meghana Paritala and freshman Ashton Schwerin also won 8-3 over Carrie Jansen and Caitlin Brannen. Senior Carolina Hannes and freshman Laia Gonzalez-Garrido completed the Panther sweep in doubles play, winning 8-1 over Nellie Bloomberg and Jennifer Sondreal.

 

Paritala pushed to her No. 1 singles winning streak to four matches rolling past Kate Wylie 6-1, 6-0. Paritala won her 80th career singles match and now is only five wins behind UNI's all-time leader Nancy Land. UNI's Kanade, Moraes, and freshman Diana Mendez all won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0.

 

The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow at the Black Hawk Tennis Club against Chicago State. The match was originally schedule for 6 p.m., but has been pushed back to 8 p.m.
