FORT MYERS, FL - The team score of 7-0 was somewhat deceptive, but that was indeed the score, as Colgate defeated NJIT in men's tennis Wednesday in the second of four matches on the Highlanders' Spring Break trip to Florida.
Half of the six singles spots went to three sets, but Colgate prevailed in all three while also winning three slots in straight sets. The Raiders also gained the doubles point by taking all three of those matchups.
NJIT (9-5) took the first, third and fourth singles to three sets apiece. Colgate's Martin McIntyre defeated Steve Erickson, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the top spot. Tyler Deck of the winners took NJIT's Cosmin Chiujdea, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at number three. And Phil Bernasek prevailed in the fourth slot over Highlander Anthony Tunnero, 6-0, 3-6, 10-6.
The closest doubles contest was first doubles, where McIntyre and Deck topped Tunnero and Chiujdea, 8-4.
NJIT is slated to take on Stony Brook at 10 am and then Wisconsin-Green Bay at 2 pm on Thursday before heading back to New Jersey.
