Lobos Take UNLV In Extra Innings, 6-5
May 10, 2008 LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Senior Ian Hollick hit a triple down the right field line in the top of the 10th to score Mike Brownstein and gave the University of New Mexico baseball team a 6-5 win over UNLV on Friday night at Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas. The Lobos improved to 30-20 overall and 14-5 in Mountain West Conference action, while UNLV dropped to 20-30 and 8-11. The Lobos took a 3-0 lead early in the game. In the first inning, Hollick recorded the first of his four walks and scored on a two-out error by second baseman Bryan Resnick, 1-0. In the second inning, designated hitter Coty Wilson scored on a single by Scott Gracey, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hibbitts, 3-0. The Rebels were able to collect two runs in the second and two in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead on UNM starter Bobby LaFromboise. Hollick led off the fifth inning with a walk and scored on a single by Brian Cavazos-Galvez to tie the game at 4-4. After a pitching change by the Rebels, Cavazos-Galvez scored on a single by Wilson to give the Lobos a 5-4 lead. The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning when UNM reliever Clinton Cox gave up a two-out bases-loaded single to Braden Walker to score J.J. Sferra and tie the score at 5-5. Cox got Joe DiMaggio to fly out to Cavazos-Galvez in right field to go into an extra frame. After four walks and a hit by pitch in five plate appearances for Hollick, the third baseman from Corona, Calif., hit the two-out triple to score Brownstein who had doubled in the previous at-bat, 6-5.
Cox (3-1) finished up the game in the 10th, getting the Rebels to fly out to each of the Lobo outfielders and keeping a single base runner stopped at second. Three Lobos recorded two hits each, Brownstein, Gracey, and Kevin Atkinson, as UNM hit the 10-hit mark for the 32nd time this season. It is also the second time in the last three years that the Lobos have reached the 30-win mark. The Lobos continue at UNLV on Saturday, May 10. Game time at Wilson Stadium is set for 3 p.m. (MDT). |
