Abou-Zekry and Scott Earn All-Conference Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico women's tennis team earned two All- MWC honors for the 2007-08 season. Ola Abou-Zekry was named all-conference in both singles and on the doubles team with partner Lucy Scott. Abou-Zekry, a junior from Cairo, Egypt, finished the regular season with a 14-13 record on the singles court. She went 11-10 at the No. 1 spot and 12-10 this spring. She has won six of her last ten matches helping push the Lobos to a tie for second place of the MWC and a No. 3 seed in the tournament. Abou-Zekry had a national ranking as high as No. 94 this season. She faced nine ranked players during the spring, including her final four matches of the regular season. Abou-Zekry collected wins against Vanderbilt's Catherine Newman, ranked No. 24 at the time, on January 18 and BYU's Anastasia Surkova, No. 65 during the match on April 12. This is Abou-Zekry second consecutive selection. Her doubles partner in 11 matches was Lucy Scott, all at the No. 1 spot for a 6-5 mark. The duo faced two ranked teams collecting an upset in the final regular season match against TCU's No. 12 pair Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska 9-7 (7-2). Scott, a senior from Wrexham, Wales, earned All-MWC doubles honors last season with partner Sandra Zmak and this is Abou-Zekry first doubles selection. The Lobos face San Diego State on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the MWC Championship Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas at 10 a.m.
