Wildcats Bounce Back With 5-1 Win Over Hawks

Sept. 9, 2007

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - After faltering to No. 2 North Carolina yesterday, Villanova bounced back with a convincing 5-1 win over Monmouth University on the second day of competition at the Vonnie Gros Tournament at West Chester University. The win allowed the Wildcats to split the weekend and move to 3-2 on the season.

Villanova's offense, which erupted for five first-half goals, wasted little time getting on the scoreboard after experiencing a small scoring drought in the second half of yesterday's game. Freshmen classmates Meg Ryan and Lauren Wuzzardo each scored a goal in the first four minutes of play giving Villanova an early 2-0 lead.

Junior Alison Boris, who paced the Wildcats with two goals, followed soon after by notching back-to-back goals extending Villanova's lead to 4-0. Boris' first goal was reminiscent of her game-winning tally versus Drexel earlier this week. Sophomore forward Jenn Nazarethian sent a ball into the circle, where Boris was positioned to redirect the shot past Monmouth's goalkeeper. Three minutes later Boris maneuvered the ball down the right sideline and into the Wildcat circle defeating numerous Hawk defenders to post Villanova's fourth goal of the game.

With 18:31 still left in the first half, Stephanie Campbell continued to establish herself as threat on Villanova's penalty corners. Once again, the senior captain capitalized on a straight shot opportunity to close out the Wildcats' scoring for the remainder of the game.

The Villanova defense dominated throughout the game, rarely allowing the Hawks to even cross their offensive 25 yard line. However, a small defensive breakdown in the second half proved costly for the `Cats as Monmouth's Annie LoPresti weaved down the left sideline and into the circle to register the lone goal for the Hawks.

After playing two games in two days, Villanova will take a small break this week before opening conference play against BIG EAST foe Connecticut on Sunday, Sept. 16, at noon in Storrs, Conn.
