PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
After playing in only her second game on the collegiate level, freshman Meg Ryan receives the highly coveted BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of September 3. Ryan's outstanding play, highlighted by her precision around the goal, led Villanova to its first win of the 2007 season as the Wildcats defeated Siena 10-0 last Saturday. The freshman forward collected four goals and two assists to tally 10 total points for the day, which makes her the current leader in the BIG EAST with an average of five points per game. The Wayne, Pa. native ignited the scoring flurry with back-to-back goals to open the game, as well as notched Villanova's 10th goal in the second half.
Despite the Wildcats clearly showing their offensive prowess in the 10-0 win, Villanova also displayed their ability to completely shut down an opponent's offense. Most noticeable was senior captain and veteran back Stephanie Campbell, who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for her stellar play in Saturday's contest. Campbell led the defensive unit to its first shutout of the 2007 season, as well as scored one goal and dished out two assists. She also helped direct Villanova's offensive by generating runs from her position in the backfield. As a result, Campbell is the BIG EAST leader in the assists per game category with an average of 1.50 per game.
These two Wildcats, along with their teammates, look to build on Saturday's successes as they take on Drexel University this Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
