Wildcats Rewarded with No. 20 Ranking

Sept. 25, 2007

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova field hockey team has earned a Division I No. 20 ranking in this week's womensfieldhockey.com national poll as a result of the Wildcats outstanding performances so far this season. Villanova is currently 6-2 for the season and boasts a 2-0 record in the BIG EAST. During the team's present four-game winning streak, the Wildcats have outscored their opposition by a 15-6 margin.

Villanova posted a 2-0 record last week as they knocked off BIG EAST foe Rutgers by a score of 2-1, followed by a convincing 5-2 victory over the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh. Freshman Lauren Wuzzardo, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, paced the Wildcats as she recorded three goals and two assists for eight total points. The midfielder from Bridgeton, N.J. notched the game-winning goal to lift the Wildcats over the Scarlet Knights on Friday night. Wuzzardo then carried her momentum into Sunday tallying two goals and two assists in the non-conference win over Lehigh.

Since the beginning of the 2007 season, Villanova has garnered three BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, three conference Honor Roll nods, and one ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week accolade. Freshmen Meg Ryan and Lauren Wuzzardo have each been recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt freshman Maura McCormick was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week, as well as the ECAC Goalkeeper of the Week. In addition, senior Stephanie Campbell was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice, while junior Allison Boris received the same honor the week of Sept. 10.

Villanova looks to extend their winning streak as they battle West Chester University on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m. in the Villanova Stadium.
