Drexel Downs 'Cats 13-3

Feb. 27, 2008

Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Gwenna Johnson scored four goals to help lead Drexel (3-1-0) to a 13-3 victory over Villanova (1-1-0) on a frigid night at Villanova Stadium. The game began with snow flurries falling before the snow squall passed.

Sarah Carter opened the scoring for the Dragons at 28:22 off a pass from Katie Bradley. Villanova junior Taylor Lucy (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep) took a feed from sophomore Samantha McKillip (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood H.S.) and found the back of the net with her shot to even the count at one with 26:39 to go in the first half.

However, Drexel scored the game's five unanswered goals over the next 11 minutes to take command of the contest. Jessica Bill and Kaitlin Keegan recorded unassisted goals before Katie Lawson converted a free position shot. Johnson and Keegan then added their second goals of the night.

Lucy picked up an unassisted goal at the 14:57 mark for Villanova but Drexel responded in short order on a goal off the stick of Nicole Adams. Carter was credited with an assist on the play that extended the lead to 7-2. Junior Katie Stone (Garden City, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) scored for the Wildcats with 7:25 left in the first half to cut the Drexel advantage to 7-3. But Johnson scored two more goals before intermission to create a 9-3 lead for the Dragons at the break.

Neither team scored in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bradley gave Drexel a 10-3 edge at 19:10 and the Dragons would score three more times while shutting out the `Cats in the second half. The final count was 13-3.

Drexel outshot Villanova 33-15 in the game and owned the advantage in ground balls (17-15). Maggie Langan (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill H.S.) made nine saves in net for the Wildcats while Laura La Bella had eight of Drexel's 10 saves before giving way to Whitney Johnson and Rachel Behrndt in the latter stages of the second half.

Villanova plays its first road game of 2008 when it travels to Sacred Heart on Sunday for a noon game.
