Louisville Uses Second Half Burst to Down Wildcats 15-7

VILLANOVA, Pa. - A second half surge by Louisville (6-2 overall) broke open a tight game and lifted the Cardinals to a 15-7 victory over Villanova (2-4 overall) on an overcast, blustery afternoon at Villanova Stadium.

The squads played a tight first half that ended with the contest tied at four.

Bergan Foley got the scoring started for the Cardinals before Wildcat junior Katie Stone scored the first of her three goals on the day to knot matters at one. Sierra Smith-Hart scored an unassisted tally for the Cardinals before Stone responded with a second goal off a feed from senior Amanda Carlson at 16:51. Junior Taylor Lucy picked up a goal for the `Cats on a free position shot at 9:20 and Rachael Ponge scored off a feed from Taryn McKenna to build a 4-2 edge for the `Cats with 5:23 to go in the first half.

But Foley scored a pair of goals in 37 seconds before the half to tie the game at four heading into the break.

Brittany Poist and Smith-Hart scored twice in the first 1:06 to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead. Stone's third goal of the day on a free position shot at 27:07 brought the Wildcats to within one before Emily Dashiell ignited a three goal surge for the Cardinals to make it 9-5. A Kyler O'Shea goal got Villanova to within 9-6 before Louisville notched the game's next four goals.

McKenna rounded out the scoring for Villanova with an unassisted tally with 1:24 left.

The final was 15-7 in favor of the Cards.

Louisville outshot VU 34-17 and held a 14-10 advantage on draw controls. Senior Lauren Latchford made nine saves for the Wildcats before giving way to Cassie Eure and Maggie Langan. Jen Heup made five saves in net for the Cardinals.
