Wildcats Offense Cannot Overcome UConn

April 19, 2008

Box Score

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore Danielle Maricle tried to give the Wildcats a late inning surge scoring a run in the sixth inning, but VU could not overcome UConn, falling 5-1 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Wildcats (15-23-1, 4-10) combined for four hits in the game, while UConn drilled out 10. Maricle, senior Jackie Dempsey, sophomore Eryn Teague, and senior Lisa Curran each went 1-for-3, with Maricle scoring the lone run.

The Huskies knocked out five runs in the first inning, jumping to a quick 5-0 lead. A lead off single got them rolling and an RBI triple scored the games first run. Two miscues from the Wildcats accounted for two of the runs.

Both teams were quiet though the sixth inning when Maricle launched a single in the left field to start the inning. A groundout from Dempsey moved her over and she crossed home as sophomore Jess O'Boyle reached on an error from Connecticut.

Senior pitcher Nicci Ward threw for seven innings, with no earned runs and she struck out eight batters.

The Wildcats continue their homestand, hosting Providence at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday in a BIG EAST doubleheader.
