Wildcats Drop Game One After Rain Delay

April 20, 2008

Box Score

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova's five hits in game one of a doubleheader against Providence could not overcome the hitting of the Friars as they fell, 2-0, in the first game.

Sophomore Danielle Maricle got the Wildcats' first hit with a bunt single that she was able to reach base on in the bottom of the third inning.

It was Providence who got on the board in the fourth as a lead off walk got the inning started. An RBI double from Mary Rose Sheehy earned the game's first run as the Friars jumped to a 1-0 lead. Junior pitcher Laura Determan finished the inning with a strikeout, leaving two Friars on base.

Junior Meghan Morese knocked a single into left field to begin the bottom of the fourth, but was out at second as sophomore Eryn Teague reached on a fielder's choice. Teague stole second and moved to third on a single from sophomore Jess O'Boyle. The Wildcats were not able to send anyone home, as the inning ended with one left on base.

A lead off double for Providence began the fifth inning, with the runner moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. A single up the middle sent the runner home, giving Providence a 2-0 lead. With two on base and two out, there was a 40 minute rain delay. When play resumed, the inning ended with a foul-out and two runners left on base.

Villanova got a lead off single from freshman Becky LaMarca, to get things rolling in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Jessica Curtis pinch hit and reached base on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved over on a sacrifice bunt, but the inning ended on a groundout, with two runners stranded.

Senior Carolyn Brown hit a single in the bottom of the seventh, hoping to extend the inning for the Wildcats, but Providence held strong, winning game one, 2-0.
