2006-07 Northwestern APR Data (PDF Format)
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data on Tuesday, and Northwestern continues to excel in its academic performance. Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship student-athlete. An APR of 925 translates to an NCAA Graduation Rate of approximately 60 percent. Every Northwestern program has an APR of 969 or better, with four programs earning a perfect 1,000 score: men's tennis, women's fencing, women's golf and women's lacrosse. In addition to those sports, seven other Wildcats' programs recorded perfect scores for the 2006-07 year: men's basketball, men's swimming, women's basketball, women's soccer, women's swimming, women's tennis and volleyball. All information in the latest report is for the past four academic years. With this being the fourth year of the APR data collection by the NCAA, all future reports will be issued on the basis of a four-year rolling rate for all sports. Also of note is Northwestern's football team, which compiled an outstanding 992 APR score in 2006-07 to earn a four-year rate of 969. The average cumulative APR for the sport is 934 according to the latest data. The gridiron 'Cats have won the American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) Academic Achievement Award for having the highest graduation rate in the country in four of the last six years. The average APR for all Division I student-athletes is 961, according to the latest data. The average APR for male student-athletes is 951, while the average for female student-athletes is 969. Teams that score below 925 and have a student leave the institution while ineligible lose up to 10 percent of their scholarships. Known as immediate penalties in the academic reform program, these scholarships can be lost each year and not re-awarded until the following year. Northwestern has been able to achieve its academic success while also competing at the highest level athletically; despite fielding a smaller number of varsity athletics programs than most BCS schools, Northwestern has finished in the top-30 in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings in each of the last three years. |
