EVANSTON, Ill. -- After playing their first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday and spending a day evaluating video, the Wildcats returned to the practice field Tuesday morning for a 20-period, full-pad session.

It was a perfect morning for practice as clear skies and bright sunshine greeted the 'Cats for their 7:30 a.m. start.

"This is a critical week for our football team," said NU coach Pat Fitzgerald. "After having a couple days off, it took us a little while to get going today, but I felt we finished strong, especially on the offensive side of the ball. It was pretty physical out there."

There were some eye-opening plays on both sides of the ball, with veterans Tyrell Sutton and Corey Wootton leading the way.

Defensively, the Wildcats continue to take shape this spring under new defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz. In addition to his coordinator duties, Hankwitz is also coaching the safeties. One of those players is returning starter and true junior Brad Phillips, who started nine games in 2007. He finished his sophomore season with 55 tackles, four pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble.

• New director of athletics Jim Phillips visited practice today. He is in his second day as Northwestern's new AD.
• The Wildcats will hold their 10th spring session on Wednesday morning (7:30 a.m.) and will practice in helmets and shorts.
