ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its final dual-meet competition of the 2007-08 season, No. 18 Northwestern topped No. 16 Penn State, 183-150, while falling to No. 13 Ohio State, 232.5-101.5, Saturday in a quad-dual hosted by No. 4 Michigan.
The Wildcats, who previously competed against the host Wolverines this season, scored their races only against the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions. Both OSU and PSU participated in a traditional quad-dual meet.
The meet was a two-day event. NU concludes the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a 7-6 record.
Northwestern began the second day of action with a season-best time in the 200 medley relay, getting a 1:31.21 from Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija). The time was good for third overall behind Ohio State and Michigan.
Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) took third overall in the 500 free, swimming an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying cut of 4:23.36 to defeat Penn State's entrants while finishing second against Ohio State. Beckman followed as NU's top finisher in the 200 IM, coming in eighth overall with a 1:53.03. Three OSU swimmers came in ahead of Beckman, while the junior defeated all of PSU's competitors.
Bubolz took second overall in the 100 fly with a `B' time of 48.25, coming in behind Michigan's Chris Brady while beating everyone from Ohio State and Penn State.
During the first diving break of the day, senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) scored a 318.35 on the 1-meter board to take fourth overall behind three Ohio State divers.
Beckman came out in the 100 back and tied for seventh overall with a 51.26, matching Ohio State's Philip Seleskie. Freshman
Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) was Northwestern's top finisher in the 100 free with a ninth-place time of 46.74 after All-American Barbic was DQed in the event.
Franklin's 58.05 in the 100 breast was good for eighth overall, second against Penn State and fourth versus Ohio State.
On the 3-meter board, junior Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took fourth overall behind a trio of OSU divers with a 327.30, while McIntosh was right behind him in fifth with a 311.15.
In the final event of the meet, the Wildcats were fourth behind two Wolverines' teams and a Buckeyes' relay in the 800 free relay. NU's squad of Nilsson, Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School), Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) swam a 6:43.51 in the race. Nilsson's leadoff 200 free of 1:37.00 was a season-best and an NCAA `B' cut in the event for the junior.
Northwestern returns to action Feb. 28 to March 1 at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor.
