EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Andy Long (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) has been named a third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honoree, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Long was a first-team Academic All-District V selection in the men's at large category, which includes sports not covered by their own dedicated Academic All-America program. First-team honorees at the District level then are eligible for the All-America ballot.

Long was Northwestern's third-quickest distance swimmer on the year, breaking his own career record in the 1,650 free at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. A double major in mechanical engineering and manufacturing & design engineering, Long is graduating from NU a year early to work with NASA's space program, building robotics to aid in data collection in space.

Long is the second men's swimming Wildcat to win Academic All-America accolades, following in the footsteps of 2004 second-team selection Tony Swanson.
